Australia's Southern Rock Lobster Capital
We welcome you to experience the magnificent rugged coastline and natural beauty of Port MacDonnell, the southernmost port in South Australia.
The traditional owners, the Bungandidj Aborigines, lived largely on the produce from the sea and the town is officially known as "Australia's Southern Rock Lobster Capital ".
Port MacDonnell is still an authentic fishing village with locally caught cooked, fresh or frozen Southern Rock Lobster available to the public during the fishing season from October 1st to May 31st each year.
Port MacDonnell is situated in South Australia's "Limestone Coast" approximately 28km south of Mount Gambier. Located halfway between Adelaide and Melbourne, Port MacDonnell is one of the treasures at the gateway to the Great Ocean Road. (450km south east of Adelaide and 460km west of Melbourne)
Getting there is easy with daily coach services, and coach/rail services via Warrnambool or Ballarat and regular return flights, with Rex Airlines, available between Mount Gambier and Melbourne/Adelaide.
Port MacDonnell has something for everyone; an especially great destination for those who love water sports, it offers fishing, surfing, boating, snorkeling, sailing, and for the more adventurous internationally renowned sinkholes for cave diving! It also offers the opportunity for 4 wheel driving, history and walking trails, golf, lawn bowls, tennis, fun on the beach and so much more!!
The "Causon Havoc Bait & Tackle Bayside Festival" is a community organised family festival normally held annually on the first Sunday in January (excluding January 1st) on the Port MacDonnell foreshore attracting around 8,000 people. Great for both locals and visitors it offers local produce, children's rides and activities, arts and crafts and great live entertainment throughout the day, plus the traditional favourites including the Bay Fun Run, Octopus Throw, Pie Eating Competition, Yabbie Races, Vintage Car displays.
The Port MacDonnell Off Shore Angling Club hold their major Tuna & Sportsfish Competition in early May each year and also hold competitions each month, year round.
The Port MacDonnell Fishing & Outdoor Expo; hosted by the Port MacDonnell Tourist Association, is held on the last Sunday in February each year. Visitors will see everything from caravans, camping goods and outdoor furniture to recreational boats, marine equipment and fishing tackle. Garden enthusiasts and craft people can browse and purchase goods and equipment as well as stroll through market type stalls.
